There are six levels of competition, which each require a different level of mathematical knowledge to compete. To start, you will need to enter your child into a qualifying round.
Once you have entered the qualifying round, you are required to complete a specific set of tasks to qualify for a final round of the competition. In this round, you will compete with other competitors who have the same math skills, abilities, and experience that your child has. You may enter multiple times for several competitions, but once you are eliminated, you cannot return to that competition for two years.
During the qualifying rounds and a final round, your child is required to write a mathematical problem and solve it within a set amount of time. The more difficult the problem, the greater your child's probability of winning the contest. Click here to know how to enter a math competition.
After all the qualifying rounds, the time limit for the final round is twelve hours. If your child does not reach the time limit during the qualifying rounds, you may be asked to re-qualify. If, however, your child completes the qualifying rounds, he or she will be required to enter the final round within this time limit.
If your child is unable to participate in the contest, they will be entered in a group, or he or she will be automatically placed in a section of the competition. In most contests, there is a minimum number of students needed to participate in order to qualify for the final round. A minimum of five students may be accepted for participation in the final round, but only three may be taken for a given group.
When you enter your child into a math competition, you should ask questions about how he or she is going to prepare for the challenge and what he or she needs to prepare for the competition. Some contests ask for a specific amount of math homework that your child must complete before being entered into the final round. Other contests do not require homework or may have it optional.
These types of contests vary widely in terms of how the participant and his or her children are entered in the contest. Be sure to research the rules of the contest to get an idea of what kinds of information you will need to prepare for the competition. For more information, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mathematics_competitions.
